Tyrus Evan Syrah 2006 Walla Walla (Washington State)

Tyrus Evan is the name of Ken Wright’s latest winemaking venture that takes its name from the middle names of Ken’s two sons.  It is the establishment of an opportunity for the sons to possibly enter the winemaking world with their father some day.  And more importantly, it is another avenue of winemaking for Ken to explore, taking advantage of some remarkable fruit coming from the Walla Walla region in the southern reaches of Washington and Oregon.  Ken’s mastery with Willamette Valley Pinot Noir has already been well established, and in just three short years, Ken has shown that his Midas touch seems almost limitless.

The 2006 Syrah (all from the Seven Hills Vineyard in Walla Walla) has an amazing bouquet that truly speaks to its terroir, with earthy notes of truffle and mineral slowly melding into a slightly spicy mélange of rich black fruits.  With time, aromas of cola, pepper and black cherry emerge.  The fruit intensity gives it an almost forceful palate entry, but the structure is so smooth and lush that it retains a very feminine style.  Ripe black cherry, black raspberry and oak spice flavors are delicious, and the finish is quite long, with plenty of tannin to keep it dry and give it firm grip.  Classic red meat dishes will partner beautifully here.  Voices of Wine Rating: 93 points
