Crucero Wines of Chile

Along with his father, Don Germán, Alberto Siegel founded this winery in Santa Cruz in 1980 and started planting vineyards in the Colchagua valley.  At the beginning, Viña Siegel only sold bulk wines to the biggest Chilean wineries, like Concha y Toro, San Pedro and Santa Rita. In 1997, Alberto decided to enter the bottled wines business, and made the necessary investments to go ahead with this project. Now, the winery has a capacity of 2 million gallons and the company owns over 1,300 acres of vineyards in Colchagua.

The 2009 Chardonnay has a warm bouquet that shows off new oak and buttery vanillin in a very California style (you might even think Napa).  Medium full and round, that butter note opens the palate, but soon ample fruit flavors move to the fore, as apple, pear and tropical fruit flavors all make an appearance.  It has good balance and weight, and a long finish.  Voices of Wine rating: 89 points.

The 2008 Cabernet has a lovely and intense ruby color. Beautiful aromas of red ripe fruits, strawberry jam, hints of plums and some vanilla notes fill the bouquet. Mouthfilling and round, this balanced, concentrated and persistent red wine has a soft tannin structure.

The 2008 Carmenere is deep ruby. Cherry, blackcurrant and dark cherry on the nose. Juicy dark fruit flavors turn slightly bitter in the middle palate and are framed by dusty tannins. Finishes with tightly focused bitter cherry and pepper qualities and decent length. This gets better with a bit of aeration.  Steven Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar rating: 87 points.

Wine: Apothic Red Blend 2008 California

Retail: $11.99

Rating: 90 points

The bouquet has a light edge of tar and graphite at first, and then it turns earthy, with herb and ripe black fruit aromas.  Medium full and soft on the palate, it gains a lot of ripe red fruit flavors and plenty of richness, but never seems overdone.  Really nice.

Wine: Montes Alpha Chardonnay 2008 Casablanca Valley, Chile

Retail: $21.99

Rating: 90 points

The bouquet is smooth and supple, a tad reticent at first, but with time a complex arrangement of leafy greens, citrus rind and melon aromas emerge, along with a very light spice note. Full and round, it has a wonderful, caressing mouthfeel, then pinpoint acidity arrives to firm up the grip and give rise to an array of fresh melon flavors.  A rich wine, but it stays decidedly dry.

Wine: Willamette Valley Vineyards Pinot Noir 2009 Willamette Valley, Whole Cluster Fermented

Retail: $17.99

Rating: 88+ points

Pale purple with a pinkish tinge, this wine has a light but lively bouquet with aromas of candied cherries, cranberry and light spice.  Medium bodied on the palate, it has a tasty balance between sweet red fruit flavors and firm acidity, making the palate buoyant and lively.  Moderate finish.  With food it gains depth and its character becomes even more defined.

Tyrus Evan Syrah 2006 Walla Walla (Washington State)

Tyrus Evan is the name of Ken Wright’s latest winemaking venture that takes its name from the middle names of Ken’s two sons.  It is the establishment of an opportunity for the sons to possibly enter the winemaking world with their father some day.  And more importantly, it is another avenue of winemaking for Ken to explore, taking advantage of some remarkable fruit coming from the Walla Walla region in the southern reaches of Washington and Oregon.  Ken’s mastery with Willamette Valley Pinot Noir has already been well established, and in just three short years, Ken has shown that his Midas touch seems almost limitless.

The 2006 Syrah (all from the Seven Hills Vineyard in Walla Walla) has an amazing bouquet that truly speaks to its terroir, with earthy notes of truffle and mineral slowly melding into a slightly spicy mélange of rich black fruits.  With time, aromas of cola, pepper and black cherry emerge.  The fruit intensity gives it an almost forceful palate entry, but the structure is so smooth and lush that it retains a very feminine style.  Ripe black cherry, black raspberry and oak spice flavors are delicious, and the finish is quite long, with plenty of tannin to keep it dry and give it firm grip.  Classic red meat dishes will partner beautifully here.  Voices of Wine Rating: 93 points

Liquor Barn’s Vintage Wine Club, est. 1994

Liquor Barn introduced it’s Vintage Wine Club in 1994 with an eye towards holiday gift giving.  Within a few months, we knew we had the makings of a really good wine club when many of our “givers” decided to enroll themselves in our wine club thanks to glowing comments and compliments they had heard from those they’d “gifted”.  A year later, we knew our Vintage Wine Club was going to be a permanent option for wine lovers at Liquor Barn when many of our “gifted” members chose to renew their memberships for themselves the following year.

Each month and every year since 1994, Liquor Barn’s Vintage Wine Club offers great quality, variety, value and insight with our monthly selections.  Members of Liquor Barn’s trained adult staff travel regularly to wine countries and regions in order to bring the best wines in the world to Kentucky, and our Vintage Wine Club members.

Robert Rosenstein, Liquor Barn’s founder and CEO said, “In my wine travel, I’ll come across an exceptional wine from a small winery that may only release a few cases- not enough to stock six of our party stores – but its quality and exclusivity makes it perfect for our Vintage Wine Club.  Or I’ll try an usual purveyor of fine wine, I find exceptional, but as a retailer, it doesn’t fit a niche in our local marketplace.  Once again, it is a perfect fit for our Vintage Wine Club.  Our members appreciate the adventure that accompanies the search for fine wines.  I have never been disappointed with my wine finds when I’ve ventured off the beaten path.”

As a member of the Liquor Barn’s Vintage Wine Club, we believe you will love the adventure and the fine wine finds as much as Rob does!
